Fire crews honored for rescue
Crews from Las Vegas Fire and Rescue and the North Las Vegas Fire Department were to be presented with an award at today's Las Vegas City Council meeting for saving four people from a house fire March 31 near Vegas and Rancho drives.
The unit citation is Las Vegas Fire and Rescue's most prestigious award, department spokesman Tim Szymanski said.
When firefighters arrived at the one-story house the morning of the fire, citizens had pulled a set of security bars off one of the windows. Firefighters entered the smoke-filled house and rescued the occupants. A 53-year-old woman died in the fire.
The award is being given because the firefighters "worked under extremely adverse conditions and stress," Szymanski said.
