Columnist Peter Benton: It’s not hard to like the Big Easy’s chances at Sandwich

Wednesday, July 16, 2003 | 9:49 a.m.

Peter Benton's golf column appears Wednesday.

Unless no one has sat down and endeavored to handicap a golf tournament -- let alone a major -- you cannot imagine just how difficult this exercise can be.

The British Open, set to be played over the 7,106-yard, par-71, Royal St. George's Golf Club in Sandwich, Kent, this week is naturally no exception. With so many incredibly talented players in the field the task of selecting the next champion is, in many instances, just pure luck.

Having stated that, listed below are my personal odds and selections for this, the 132nd British Open Championship.

That's it, gang. As previously mentioned this is not an easy task, and if you think otherwise, draw up your own odds list and make a comparison at the conclusion of play.
