Suspect in beltway incident gives up

Monday, July 14, 2003 | 9:49 a.m.

A man sought Friday morning by the Nevada Highway Patrol after his silver BMW sent a rock through the window of a 31-year-old woman's car, critically injuring her, turned himself in to authorities about 7:45 p.m. Friday, Trooper Angie Wolff said.

Richard Allen Rink, 32, was charged with felony reckless driving and other offenses in connection with the incident that left 31-year-old Michelle Rogers with life-threatening injuries.

The incident happened shortly before 8 a.m. at the Las Vegas Beltway near Charleston Boulevard. Rink lost control of his car while heading south on the beltway and went into the northbound lanes, kicking up rocks as he entered the road, Wolff said.

A rock went through the windshield of Rogers' Volkswagen Passat. She lost control of her car and it came to rest on the side of the road. Rink left the scene, Wolff said.

Several hours later troopers found the BMW at the beltway and Interstate 15. The interior had been set on fire. Rink, accompanied by an attorney, surrendered to authorities Friday night.
