Letter: Two-thirds vote requisite should not be thwarted
Thursday, July 10, 2003 | 8:36 a.m.
I feel that the legislative sessions the taxpayers have witnessed were brilliantly orchestrated and executed performances staged by our elected representatives to persuade us that we didn't know what we were doing when we voted twice to amend the Nevada Constitution so as to require a two-thirds vote within the legislative body to raise taxes. I feel that was the true objective from the get-go.
I hope that I'm wrong and that as Nevadans we don't have a governor attempting to subvert the Nevada Constitution and the will of the people by petitioning the Nevada Supreme Court and using this veiled orchestrated legislative budget crisis in order to strike down the two-thirds requirement that we voted on twice to enact as a constitutional amendment.
I hope that Nevada doesn't have a governor who has such contempt for the voters and for the rule of law that he would attempt something like what I have suggested.
I hope that Nevada doesn't have a Legislature that would engage in this level of culpability to subvert the will of the people.
I hope that I'm completely off base. Time will tell.
