Columnist Peter Benton: SouthShore CC team wins Inter-Club event

Wednesday, July 9, 2003 | 8:32 a.m.

Peter Benton's golf column appears Wednesday.

The SouthShore Country Club team of professional Wes Weston and his amateur partners -- Larry Buckley, Gary Perkins, Jim Hildebrand, Barrie Carter, John Thomson, Tony Vitale and Mark Andrus -- won last week's monthly Las Vegas Inter-Club event with 230 points.

Also with 230 points in the net Stableford tournament, but losing on a card count was the host Las Vegas Country Club team, while in third place was the TPC Summerlin team, which accumulated 225 points.

Weston, along with John Creaney (LVCC) shared top professional honors with 36 points apiece, while for the amateurs, it was SouthShore's Carter who prevailed with 38 points. He was followed by Chris Solari (Canyon Gate), Al Abolafia (Spanish Trail) and Wayne Corona (LVCC) each with 37.

With the Inter-Club series now at the midway point, the TPC Summerlin team and that from the Las Vegas Country Club are atop the standings, each with 1,093 points. They are followed by Canyon Gate (1,070), Red Rock (1,056), Spanish Trail (1,042), Dragon Ridge (1,038), SouthShore (1,023) and Anthem (966).

Over this layout in the 1977 British Open, both men delivered one of the most compelling final days in the history of the British Open, trading shot after magnificent shot with Watson finally prevailing by a stroke.

Now, 26 years later, these two players (who have combined to win eight British Open titles) will be back to battle it out for the $1.58 million purse, the richest tournament in the history of the European Senior Tour.

Woods has been nominated along with Tour de France cyclist Lance Armstrong, Formula One racecar driver Michael Schumacher, soccer's Ronaldo and biathlete Einar Bjorndalen.

The nominations come from 400 journalists from more than 70 countries.

Winning this very competitive event with a terrific score of 29-under, 115, was Wayne Corona's team of Johnny Joseph, Jeff Harmon and Marv Rubin.

Second at 116 was Mike Small, Rene Raynes, Jim Silvestri and Harold Faulkner, with third place being shared by the foursomes of Bob Bartoli, Jerry Bartman, Kasey Luczak and Mort Davies; Kent McBeath, Randy Boesch, Charlie Waterman and Mary Weidman, plus Tammy Gephardt, Dom Cambeiro, Charles Snavely and Dayton Blaine. Their scores were 117.
