New Mexico transfer wins right to play

New Mexico forward Danny Granger was cleared by the NCAA to play for the Lobos next season, according to published reports.

New Mexico was found guilty of secondary violations in the events that brought Granger to the school and will face a number of penalties, the Albuquerque Journal and Albuquerque Tribune reported today.

Granger, who transferred to New Mexico after quitting Bradley University's team in January, is not eligible to play until the second semester because NCAA transfer rules require him to sit out one full year from the time he transferred.

The work-release assignment was revoked by a Boone County Circuit judge after Clemons failed to check in with officials at Reality House on Friday. That same day, he was injured in an all-terrain vehicle accident. Clemons was in fair condition at University Hospita. Details of his injuries were not released.

51s win in ninth

The 51s broke a ninth-inning tie to earn a 9-6 victory against the Fresno Grizzlies in a Pacific Coast League contest Monday. Chris Clapinski's bases-loaded, pinch-hit single broke the tie and Eric Riggs followed with a run-scoring double and Calvin Murray got a run-scoring triple to give the 51s a 9-5 lead.

Fresno's Lance Niekro extended his hitting run to nine games with a one-out single in the ninth and scored on Tony Torcato's double.

Surgery for driver

Driver Felipe Giaffone had surgery Monday on his broken leg. He was hurt in a crash Sunday in the Kansas Indy 300 at Kansas City, Kan. The operation lasted three hours and he is expected to remain at hospitalized through the week.

Foe had heart attack

Cameroon's Marc-Vivien Foe, 28, died at the Confederations Cup last month because of a heart attack caused by an enlarged left ventricle, the state prosecutor said.

Tiger date conflict

A "long-standing, non-playing commitment" could force Tiger Woods to miss the World Match Play championship Oct. 16-19 in England. A spokesman for the tournament sponsor said today that negotiations are still going on.
