Letter: Never forget effects of DUI

One year ago my son James was killed by a drunken driver on the freeways of Los Angeles and I have not been the same since. There is not an hour that goes by without feeling the loss of my only son. It has affected me in more ways than I can count.

If you've been drinking, don't drive. Give someone else the keys, or wait until your sense of balance and reaction is back. Ask your buddies if your speech is slurred. They will know better than you. Drink some coffee or tea. Wait a few hours. Sleep it off. Give yourself and the rest of us a chance to live another day.

I realize that these suggestions would have been ignored by the driver who killed my son -- he was caught on three prior DUIs and was an uncontrollable alcoholic. But perhaps one of you reading this will stop, just for a moment, and take heed.

Remember my son James and what happened to him. I do.
