Independence Day commemorates the American colonies declaring independence from England. The Revolutionary War followed the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Here's what is open and closed on Friday:
SAFETY: Police and fire emergency services as usual. Administrative offices closed.
UTILITIES: Closed: Sprint, Southwest Gas, Nevada Power, Las Vegas Valley Water District, Cox Communications cable TV.
GOVERNMENT: Closed: Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City, North Las Vegas, Clark County, state, courts, federal offices, federal courthouse.
SCHOOLS: Closed, no classes: The 76 Clark County School District year-round schools, Community College of Southern Nevada and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
MAIL: Closed, no deliveries: U.S. Postal Service and United Parcel Service.
NEWSPAPER: Sun combined morning editions with Review-Journal. Sun offices closed.
TRANSIT: Downtown Transportation Center: Open. City Trolleys: Holiday schedule (one less trolley in operation). Citizens Area Transit: Holiday schedule (fewer buses in operation on fixed routes).
LIBRARIES: Closed: Las Vegas-Clark County District, Henderson District, North Las Vegas District, Boulder City District.
GARBAGE: Republic Services pickups as usual.
MATRIMONY: Marriage License Bureau open 8 a.m. Thursday to midnight Sunday.
FINANCES: Closed: banks, brokerage firms. (Note: State law allows banks to open on holidays as long as transactions are posted to the next business day, which in this case would be Monday. Check your local branch for potential holiday hours.)
PARKING: City parking metered spaces are free.
