Union in dispute with firm

Friday, Jan. 31, 2003 | 11:10 a.m.

Members of Teamsters Local 631 are protesting at a Rinker Materials pipe-making plant in Henderson after negotiations for a new three-year contract failed.

The protest began Jan. 17 at the Rinker plant at 2100 Burns Road in Henderson.

Ray Isner, Local 631's spokesman, said the company's offer of a 25 cent an hour increase in wages "isn't enough" and criticized the company's proposed health benefits package.

But Ray Brown, Rinker's spokesman, disagreed.

"The union is failing to understand that they already have the richest compensation program in Las Vegas. Rinker's compensation and benefits package is already substantially higher than any of the competitors'," he said. "Over the last 18 months, Rinker's sales volume are down 20 percent, and the average selling price is down 30 percent. That's because our cost of doing business is so high that it's hard for us to compete effectively."
