Letter: Choice of who stays not tough
Friday, Jan. 31, 2003 | 4:30 a.m.
In reply to Don McDonald's Jan. 28 letter, threatening to leave Las Vegas due to higher taxes, I would like to point out that Mr. McDonald would be hard pressed to find many states with lower taxes, even if the proposed increases go into effect.
I have met several parents who are happy with the elementary schools in their neighborhood but dread the time when their children will have to go to middle schools with class sizes above 40 teenagers per class. I know of two families considering a move out of Vegas because of the inferior middle and high schools.
Mr. McDonald objects to paying taxes since he uses so few public facilities. I wonder who pays for his police and fire protection, his trash pickups, his water use and who pays to keep the streets and roads in repair?
Given the choice and having Mr. McDonald leave Las Vegas in search of Utopia or having working families leave because of the lack of basic services here, I say good luck and goodbye, Mr. McDonald.
