Columnist Barb Henderson: Tying one on at a Fly Fishing paradise
Friday, Jan. 31, 2003 | 9:41 a.m.
Barb Henderson is an outdoors enthusiast, freelance writer and producer/host of outdoors radio television programming. Her column appears Friday in the Sun.
Local fly fishers can tie one on at the Las Vegas Flyfishing store -- flies, that is.
The dynamic sport of fly fishing features two types of flies: Wet flies that are fished under the water and dry flies fished on the water's surface.
A few popular wet flies at the local store, located at 7520 Washington Ave., Suite 140 in Las Vegas, include the Beadhead Halloween New Age Wooly Bugger, Beadhead Midnight Fire New Age Wooly Bugger, Olive Bird Nest, Hare's Ear Nymph and the Rainy's Woven Body Scud.
A few popular dry flies at the store: Henryville Special, Crystal Parachute Adams, Royal Humpy, Trico Spinner and the Turk's Tarantula.
You'll find more than flies at this market place for the fly fisher, as Las Vegas Flyfishing also carries a wonderful assortment of fly fishing products.
Those new to the sport frequently ask two questions: "How do I get started?" And, "What gear do I need?"
Not to worry. This knowledgeable staff will eagerly share its knowledge, because it absolutely enjoys introducing someone new to the sport.
Shawn Saunders, the store's owner/manager, has 15 years' experience as a guide and is a certified fly casting instructor. Assistant manager Matt Lyon became a guide a few years ago and has been hooked on guiding every since.
Shawn and Matt are both fantastic fly tyers. Their flies are so remarkable it would be difficult for trout to resist.
Moreover, one of the best fly tyers I know is a gentleman named "Granny" Granstrom. As a master fly tyer, he has tied trout, steelhead and salmon flies for several leading fly fishing outfitters.
"Granny" started working for Las Vegas Flyfishing in October 2001. After one visit to the store, it will be obvious that the staff at Las Vegas Flyfishing lives for this sport.
