Letter: Narrowing gap between classes
Monday, Jan. 27, 2003 | 8:37 a.m.
A Federal Reserve report shows that the gap in wealth between the rich and the poor has grown even wider than the previous too-wide gap. The report shows that the difference in median net worth between the 10 percent of families with the highest income and the 20 percent with lowest income jumped 70 percent from 1998 through 2001.
Something needs to be done.
The solutions are obvious:
Increase the tax rate for the wealthiest. (It is President Bush's folly to push for a tax cut for the richest).
Increase the minimum wage.
Also provide the poor and middle-income worker with complete health care, and offer them education and training to increase their earning power.
