Letter: Common tax would benefit everyone in state
Thursday, Jan. 23, 2003 | 9:04 a.m.
The hotels and casinos don't want any raises in the gaming tax. The public doesn't want any raises in the sales tax, and nobody wants any raises in the property tax or any raises in utility taxes.
But why can't we raise the gaming taxes? They haven't had a raise in over 10 years. The big hotels don't mind paying much higher taxes in other states that allow gambling. (Where did the money come from to build those casinos?)
As a suggestion, why can't we get rid of the gaming tax and the sales tax? Instead, call them the Nevada common tax and combine them into the same rate of 7.5 percent. By doing this, it would help raise the money needed to fund this state when the common tax goes up.
It would raise the sales and the gaming tax at the same time, giving an overall raise to everyone -- both the residents of this state and the tourists.
