Strike deadline looms in five states

Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003 | 9:34 a.m.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Some 2,700 Sprint workers in five states were braced to strike today if an agreement could not be reached with management.

The union, representing the workers at Sprint local telephone operations in Oregon, Indiana, Tennessee, North Carolina and Florida, set a 1 p.m. EST deadline. It said that higher pay and a reduction in the use of contractors is being sought. The workers are covered under separate contracts.

Sprint, based in Overland Park, Kan., in the Kansas City area, and the Communications Workers of America reached agreements over the weekend in the Pittsburgh area and in Hickory, N.C.

Negotiators were still talking earlier in the day at some of the locations, said CWA spokeswoman Candice Johnson. "We'd like to be able to reach agreements," she said.
