Letter: Benefits of organ donations overwhelming
Monday, Jan. 20, 2003 | 8:42 a.m.
While there are many personal, spiritual, religious and superstitious reasons why people are afraid or reluctant to offer an organ upon their death, the benefits for humanity and, of course, the recipient are overwhelming.
I had advanced-stage liver disease and the only hope for me was a liver transplant. I suffered for more than a year with all the symptoms: fatigue, nausea, anaerobia and, the worst of all, the loss of desire to communicate with friends and loved ones.
I was on the transplant list at two centers, one in San Francisco and one in Miami, and I received the lifesaving call from the University of Miami Transplant Center on Dec. 4. My wife and I flew immediately to Miami, and 25 hours later I felt and looked 15 years younger.
My life and dreams were saved by a very generous person and their family, who unselfishly gave so that I may live.
Please consider being an organ donor and encourage your friends to do the same.
