Holiday closings

The holiday honoring slain civil rights leader the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. will be observed Monday. He was born Jan. 15, 1929, but in 1983 King's birthday became a federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday in January. He was assassinated in 1968. Here's what is open and closed on Monday:
SAFETY: Police and fire emergency services as usual. Administrative offices closed.
UTILITIES: Closed: Nevada Power, Las Vegas Valley Water District, Cox Communications cable TV. Open: Sprint, Southwest Gas.
GOVERNMENT: Closed: Las Vegas, Henderson, Boulder City, North Las Vegas, Clark County, state, courts, federal offices, federal courthouse.
SCHOOLS: Closed, no classes: Clark County School District, Community College of Southern Nevada, University of Nevada Las Vegas.
MAIL: Closed, no deliveries: U.S. Postal Service (however, Post Office Express sites in seven Albertson's stores will be open). Open, deliveries as usual: United Parcel Service.
NEWSPAPER: Sun offices open, afternoon editions published and delivered as usual.
TRANSIT: Downtown Transportation Center: Open. City Trolleys: Holiday schedule (one less trolley in operation). Citizen Area Transit: Holiday schedule (fewer buses in operation on fixed routes).
LIBRARIES: Closed: Las Vegas-Clark County District, North Las Vegas District, Henderson District, Boulder City District.
GARBAGE: Silver State Disposal pickups as usual.
MATRIMONY: Marriage License Bureau open 24 hours, starting 8 a.m. Friday, closing midnight Monday.
FINANCES: Closed: Banks, brokerage firms.
PARKING: City's parking metered spaces free.
