Utah parents plan visit to off-limits Las Vegas

Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003 | 10:25 a.m.

SALT LAKE CITY -- Parents who do not share the Nebo School Board's distrust of Las Vegas are planning a private trip to the Nevada city so students may view art exhibits.

Paul McSweeney of Mapleton is organizing an excursion to Las Vegas so the Springville High School Russian-language and art-history students can visit the "Faberge: Treasures of the Kremlin" exhibit at the Bellagio and the "Art Through the Ages: Masterpieces of Painting From Titian to Picasso" at The Venetian.

"We're doing this in a hurry because the Faberge exhibit ends Jan. 26, and the collection goes back to Russia," McSweeney, whose daughter, Jessica, is president of Springville High's Russian Club, told The Salt Lake Tribune.

So far, five parents and 15 students plan to go.

Three times, the school board had denied a request by history and Russian-language teacher Beverly Burdett to have high school students taking a student-paid trip to San Diego to view art exhibits stop in Las Vegas to see the exhibits there.
