Task force OKs tax increase

Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2003 | 10:24 a.m.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- Iowa's casinos would face a major state tax increase under recommendations approved by a task force appointed by Gov. Tom Vilsack.

The committee voted 4-2 to offer the Legislature two options for raising taxes. The plans would raise an additional $35 million annually in casino taxes.

The task force was asked by Vilsack to address a loss of state revenue that resulted from last year's Iowa Supreme Court ruling that slot machines at the three tracks should be taxed at the same 20 percent maximum rate as riverboat casinos. The tracks had been paying a maximum of 32 percent.
