SBC Communications Inc., the second-largest U.S. local-telephone service provider, is seeking U.S. regulators' permission to sell long-distance service in Nevada.
SBC said it filed an application Tuesday with the Federal Communications Commission. Last month, the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada endorsed SBC's application, the San Antonio- based company said in a statement.
SBC and rivals are trying to win approval for selling long- distance calling in states where they already provide local-phone services to help offset declining demand from businesses. SBC offers long-distance calling in Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Connecticut and California, and later this week the company plans to seek FCC approval to add Michigan.
