Tapia released from Las Vegas hospital

Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2003 | 9:44 a.m.

Boxer Johnny Tapia was released from the University Medical Center Monday afternoon, only one day after being listed in "serious" condition and only two days after being listed as "critical."

Tapia, 35, is a Las Vegas resident who was admitted to UMC Saturday morning. He was treated for "head trauma" following a 24-hour period in which he was part of a police standoff near Bullhead City, Ariz., and, allegedly, a drug and alcohol binge.

Tapia was not arrested in the Bullhead City incident but was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia. The central figure in that episode was a cousin of Tapia, Raymond Whiting, who was wanted on aggravated assault and weapons charges.
