Enjoy a tortoise pace in Red Rock

Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area offers free hikes, walks and programs. To make required reservations or for more information on the following or upcoming programs, call 363-1922:

Tort Talks: Ongoing talks from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday in the Visitor Center about the Nevada state reptile and Mojave Desert resident.

Birding with a Ranger: An easy 2 1/2-mile hike with Ranger Jim into the world of bird watching, Friday.

La Madre Mountain: Includes a visit to one of the most active springs, a criminal mystery, and a hermit's cabin in Red Rock on the four-mile moderately strenuous hike.

Red Rock Day Camp: An outdoor classroom that will offer a short hike and craft, Friday.

Freaky Friday: A six-mile moderately strenuous hike. Relax with a cup of hot chocolate and listen to full moon fables.

Gathering Grub: A four-mile moderately strenuous hike to discover what the Indians feasted on, Saturday.

Coyote Kids: An ongoing class from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Visitor Center. Kids of all ages are invited to the fun, interactive environmental learning and crafts program.

Moenkopi Backwards: A 2 1/2 mile trek just beyond the Visitor Center with Janis and learn the basics of Red Rock Canyon ecology.

Fossil Stroll: A leisure walk, finding (not collecting) fossil sponges, snails, and lamp shells, and other sea life that lived in the area over 200 million years ago. Also on the three-mile moderate hike Sunday, learn about the forces that shaped the scenery and something about the plants and animals of the area.

Learn how to save family memories

The Jewish Genealogy Society of Southern Nevada will present a program on how to preserve one's family memories, at 1 p.m. Sunday in the multi-purpose room of the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.

Alison Turner, senior consultant for Creative Memories, will lecture as well as demonstrate procedures and methods for preservation. There will be a question and answer period following the lecture.

The program is open to anyone interested. For more information, call 363-8230 or 871-9773 after 6 p.m.
