Gibbons doesn’t get seat on Appropriations

WASHINGTON -- Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Nev., who lobbied GOP leaders for one of the open slots on the Appropriations Committee, got disappointing news Thursday -- the seats went to other lawmakers.
He'll keep his assignments from last year on the Intelligence; Armed Services; Resources; and Veterans Affairs Committees.
Freshman Rep. Jon Porter, R-Nev., fared better. He was given two seats he wanted on the Transportation Committee and the Education and Workforce Committee. Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., also serves on Transportation, but now the state will have a member on each side of the aisle angling for federal highway projects, Porter said.
Porter said he intends to negotiate for more money for the Hoover Dam bypass bridge and other Nevada projects. Porter said panel chairman Don Young, R-Alaska, is interested in helping revive the California-Nevada high-speed train project.
