Catching up With … C.J. Watson
Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003 | 9:49 a.m.
High School: Bishop Gorman ('02)
Where he is now: Tennessee
Class: Freshman
Sport: Basketball
Currently: There apparently is very little learning curve involved for Watson in the Southeastern Conference. The Volunteers are off to a 7-3 start this season, and Watson has started in the backcourt for Tennessee in every one of those games. In those contests, Watson is averaging 8.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game, in addition to his team-leading six assists per game. Also, Watson leads the Volunteers in steals with 13, and he surprisingly ranks third in blocks with five.
Looking back: The 2001-02 Sun All-State Player of the Year, Watson is one of the finest high school basketball players to pass through Southern Nevada in recent memory. In his final season with the Gaels, the two-time All-State pick did a little bit of everything, averaging 26 points and eight rebounds to lead Gorman to a 4A State Championship victory. Watson also averaged an unreal six steals per game. In 2001-02, Gorman won its second 4A title in three years, and made its third consecutive showing in the championship game.
