Berkley not on key committee

Thursday, Jan. 9, 2003 | 10:10 a.m.

WASHINGTON -- Despite her best lobbying efforts with Democratic leaders, Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., did not get a seat on the Ways and Means Committee this year.

Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California chose Reps. Stephanie Tubbs Jones of Ohio and Max Sandlin of Texas to fill the empty slots on the panel.

The committee sets tax policy and is arguably the most powerful panel in the House, Berkley has said.

Berkley wanted the seat, but she wasn't too disappointed, spokesman Michael O'Donovan said. She's busy on her three other committees: International Relations, Veterans Affairs and Transportation, he said.

Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev., also has new assignments this year. He now sits on the Budget; Armed Services; and Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committees. Ensign, now in his third year of a six-year term, remains on the Commerce, Science and Transportation and Small Business Committees.
