Pet-neutering vouchers are gone

Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2003 | 9:02 a.m.

Clark County has given away the last of its vouchers for pet owners to get their pets spayed or neutered, County Animal Control Manager Joe Boteilho said Tuesday.

The county handed out 850 vouchers worth a total of $25,000 since the giveaway began Thursday, he said.

This was the fourth year the county offered the vouchers, which were given out on a first-come, first-served basis.

The vouchers pay for all or part of a sterilization depending on how much a veterinarian charges. The vouchers are worth $10 to $40 depending on the gender of the animal and whether it is a dog or cat.

Money for the vouchers comes from unused vouchers given to people who pick up their pets from the animal shelter throughout the year.

By sterilizing more dogs and cats, the county hopes to euthanize fewer animals, Boteilho said. He added that even pet owners who didn't get vouchers should have their pets spayed or neutered.

Each year the county destroys about 10,000 animals, he said.
