Pay raises approved for justices of the peace
Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2003 | 8:52 a.m.
The Clark County Commission unanimously approved increases for justices of the peace salaries Monday, one of its first acts with two new members on the board.
Justices in Las Vegas, Henderson and in rural parts of the county typically handle small claims, traffic and police misdemeanor citations, search and arrest warrants and felony arrests through the preliminary hearing stages, including bail-setting and probable-cause determinations.
The County Commission gave raises to the 20 justices throughout the system. Rural justices received raises of 60 percent to more than 200 percent. Justices in Las Vegas, Henderson and North Las Vegas received raises of about 30 percent.
Commissioner Bruce Woodbury, a lawyer, said the raises were needed to more closely match salaries for justices working in other parts of the state.
With the pay raises, salaries range from about $51,500 in rural areas such as Searchlight to about $129,000 for the 12 justices in Las Vegas, Henderson and North Las Vegas.
