N.C. gambling probe leads to raids, arrests

Friday, Jan. 3, 2003 | 9:52 a.m.

ASHEBORO, N.C. -- Local law enforcement conducted 15 raids and arrested 29 people on gambling and other charges in the culmination of a yearlong undercover investigation.

"Operation Happy New Year" was spearheaded by the Randolph County Sheriff's Office, with the assistance of the Asheboro and Randleman police departments. Officers simultaneously served 15 search warrants Tuesday.

Among the targets were such well-known places as the American Legion and AMVETS posts, and Willet's Smoke Stop, all in Asheboro.

Carolina Bait & Tackle in Asheboro, raided Tuesday, had been the scene of another raid several years ago that also resulted in gambling charges against its owners, deputies said. Three homes were also raided.

The potential evidence that officers seized in the raids included video poker machines.

Police said they also confiscated tickets used to bet on sports and racing, records of gambling pay-outs, and more than $17,000 in cash. They also wrote citations for illegal alcohol sales at several of the locations.
