Sun sports section gets top-20 honor

The Las Vegas Sun sports section finished among the top 20 in the nation in the 40,000-100,000 circulation category at the Associated Press Sports Editors judging that concluded Wednesday in Torrance, Calif.
The Sun was the only sports section in Nevada named in the judging of daily, Sunday and special sections.
A total of 92 sports editors gathered in Torrance for the four-day contest judging session. They considered 804 section entries and 1,804 writing entries.
The top 10 in the 40,000-100,000 daily section category were the Ann Arbor (Mich.) News; Connecticut Post of Bridgeport, Conn.; Eugene (Ore.) Register-Guard; Fort Myers (Fla.) News-Press; Gainesville (Fla.) Sun; Newport News (Va.) Daily Press; Oakland Press of Pontiac, Mich.; Santa Rosa (Calif.) Press Democrat; Wichita (Kan.) Daily Eagle, and Wisconsin State Journal of Madison, Wis.
The Las Vegas Sun finished among the second 10. Also receiving honorable mention in the circulation category were the Appleton (Wis.) Post-Crescent, Chattanooga (Tenn.) Times Free Press; Everett (Wash.) Herald; Florida Today of Melbourne Beach, Fla.; Fort Wayne (Ind.) News-Sentinel; Fredericksburg (Va.) Free Lance-Star; New Haven (Conn.) Register; Topeka (Kan.) Capital-Journal, and Ventura County (Calif.) Star.
Mark Anderson of the Las Vegas Review-Journal received an honorable mention in the writing competition for news story.
