Letter: Reid on side of progress with Title IX defense

Friday, Feb. 28, 2003 | 5:08 a.m.

Just last Wednesday night, at the first-round girl's Basketball State Championship game between Reno and Western High Schools, I was impressed with the quality, skill and intensity of the players. There is no question that the caliber of play we witnessed was due in large part to the support of women's athletics and quality coaching made possible by Title IX. Opportunities provided to these outstanding women athletes will, over time, provide even greater benefits for their schools, communities and our country.

Not only has Title IX been responsible for a huge increase of participation by women in school athletic programs over the last 30 years, the law requires educational institutions to maintain policies of gender equity. It is difficult to understand why President Bush (the Education President?) would want to weaken an equal rights law.

It's gratifying to know that my daughters have and, I hope, will continue to have opportunities to excel in athletics as well as in academics.
