Letter: Bush provoking an already-bad world situation
Friday, Feb. 28, 2003 | 9:19 a.m.
At this rate, civilians will be eating pizza and suicide bombers will be blowing up themselves and everyone else too, like they've been doing in Israel on a regular basis. That worries me a lot more than "weapons of mass destruction" because I don't think a government would use them against another government, and they haven't yet (except for the nuclear bomb the U.S. dropped in 1945).
But any individual nutcase terrorist doesn't mind going to join "Allah" by using any kind of crude bomb. Now the U.S. is totally perceived as the enemy. Provoking the Arabs further will quite possibly mean another 9-11, especially if they know we're on the verge of attacking them anyway.
The job of any leader (Bush included) is to make his people more stable, not less stable. Not to mention the gouging gas prices as a result of all this tension.
If the job of the U.S. is to topple any ruthless, vile dictator, then that path will be a never-ending military struggle with lots of "collateral" damage -- otherwise known as fatalities. Yes, I feel sorry for the poor people who have to live under the iron fist of Saddam, but frankly they are not citizens of my country. Besides, who died and left us in charge of them?
The people of this country need to wake up and elect an intelligent, diplomatic and compassionate leader the next time around. The scenario would be totally different if our president were elected by popular vote, like he/she should be. (I don't think a President Gore would have us in this mess).
There will be peace only when the power of love is stronger than the love of power!
