Goodman, Weekly to visit medical clinic in Cleveland
Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003 | 11:14 a.m.
Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman and City Councilman Lawrence Weekly will spend two days next week in Ohio, touring the Cleveland Clinic.
The Cleveland Clinic integrates clinical and hospital care with research and physician training. Clinic officials have declined to comment on their interest in the city.
A study performed in early 2002 said the city's 61 acres of former Union Pacific Railroad land downtown would be a prime location for an academic medical center, in addition to residential housing, office space or a performing arts center. Goodman has said that his top priority for the city's 61-acre piece of land downtown on the former Union Pacific Railroad parcel is a "center of excellence."
Goodman has said he envisions an academic medical center taking up at least 21 acres of the site. The city is also hoping that their lobbyists in Washington, D.C., will get $3 million from the federal government to help with initial costs for an academic medical center.
