Fire forces evacuation at Reno hotel-casino

Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003 | 11:07 a.m.

RENO -- Dozens of guests were evacuated from the Circus Circus Hotel-Casino in Reno at midday Wednesday before firefighters snuffed out a fire in a hotel tower.

One Reno firefighter was sent to the hospital with a cut hand but no other injuries were reported.

The fire broke out shortly after noon in the hotel's east tower, KRNV-TV in Reno reported. Initial reports indicated the fire started in an electrical transformer but fire officials later said it could have been caused by a cigarette.

Heavy smoke forced the evacuation of 40 to 50 people from the third, fourth and fifth floors.

Firefighters closed downtown streets around the hotel but had the fire out by about 12:20 p.m. Much of the building was without power much of the day.
