Savvy wine buys: Allegrini La Grola Veronese ‘98
Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003 | 8:19 a.m.
The wines of Valpolicella have long been thought of as undistinguished, and large producers such as Cella have dumped inexpensive versions of these wines on the U.S. market for a long time. One of the reasons this way of thinking is changing is Allegrini, a terrific producer who is bringing prestige to the label.
A nicely extracted wine with hints of berries and currants, this wine is Veronese and a bit of Syrah, and recently got a heady 90-point rating from Wine Spectator Magazine. It is ripe and lush, ready to drink now, a nice accompaniment to grilled or roasted meats, or any of Italy's fine cheeses.
Available at Lee's Discount Liquor, $19.49.
