Boulder City to again host SCORE race

Wednesday, Feb. 26, 2003 | 9:11 a.m.

Boulder City is giving another chance to the summer off-road race that had some city residents complaining about the dust racers kicked up last year.

The City Council on Tuesday approved the second annual SCORE Henderson's Terrible 250 Desert Race, which is scheduled for July 12 in the desert south of Henderson between Boulder City and Jean. About half of the 86-mile course is within the Boulder City limits in and around the El Dorado Valley west of U.S. 95.

Bud Pico, manager of tourism and sales with the Henderson Convention Center and Visitors Bureau, said the race would have been canceled if the Boulder City council had voted no.

Council members approved of the race after Pico said bureau representatives will meet with concerned Boulder City residents and more will be done to keep the dust down around Boulder City during the race.

Last year about 16 miles of the dirt race route closest to Henderson was watered down before the race. This summer close to 25 miles of the course nearest to Boulder City will be watered down before the race, Pico said.

Pico also said that much of the dust that ended up on Boulder City residents' property after last year's race was probably the result of a fierce storm and not the race.

Pico said the race drew about 17,000 spectators and provided a $6 million boost to the local economy last year.
