Casino equipment maker files suit against slot makers

Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2003 | 11:18 a.m.

Shuffle Master Inc. said Monday it has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against WMS Gaming and Bally Gaming and Systems -- considered the second- and third-largest slot makers in the country behind International Game Technology -- alleging infringement of Shuffle Master's patent governing a bonusing software system.

The suit follows an announcement last week that Shuffle Master entered into a licensing deal for bonusing software with International Game Technology.

Under the terms of the deal, Shuffle Master said it would receive an undisclosed fee from IGT in exchange for IGT's right to become an exclusive licensee of the bonusing patents.

Las Vegas-based Shuffle Master says it owns patents covering a broad range of bonusing methods for video slot machines.

It also makes card shufflers, table games and casino game software.

WMS and Bally have not yet responded to the allegations.
