Southern Nevada high school seniors are eligible for up to $20,000 in college scholarship aid from a foundation set up in memory of a Utah teenager who died before securing her dream of becoming a teacher.
The Jessica Elizabeth Luttrell Foundation was created by her family following her death in 1999. Applicants for the scholarships are being recruited from high schools in southern Utah, Nevada and Arizona. The funds may be applied toward the cost of tuition, books, room and board while studying full-time at a college, university or vocational training center.
"We are looking for individuals who know what they want to do with their life and who have a good plan on how to get there, but don't have all the financial resources they need," said Charles Luttrell, Jessica's uncle and a foundation board member.
Applicants will be selected based on a number of factors, including financial need, demonstrated service to others, a written essay and an interview with the selection committee.
Applications will be available soon at high school guidance counselors. For more information about the foundation, call (435) 574-0838.
