SUN CAPITAL BUREAU
CARSON CITY -- Owners of late model vehicles in Clark County would no longer have to get annual smog checks if a bill introduced by Senate Minority Leader Dina Titus, D-Las Vegas, becomes law.
Senate Bill 189 would allow owners of 1996 or newer vehicles to get vehicle emissions standards tests in odd-numbered years only, but the per-test cost would go up. The price of an annual smog check is $25. The biennial exam would cost $35.
Titus said Friday she had been assured that relaxing the smog testing would not cause additional air pollution in Southern Nevada. She said she recommended the increase in the fee to help testing stations make up some of the revenue they would lose.
Her bill was referred to the Senate Natural Resources Committee for study.
