January airline traffic beats 2001 level

Thursday, Feb. 20, 2003 | 11:03 a.m.

January passenger traffic at McCarran International Airport was up by 11.8 percent over the previous year and topped comparable pre-Sept. 11 levels for the first time.

Airport officials said 2.81 million people used McCarran in January compared with 2.51 million in January 2002, an 11.8 percent increase. That total also beats the 2.79 million that used the airport in January 2001.

Four of the five busiest airlines at McCarran had double-digit increases in January over the number of passengers last year, but only two beat totals from January 2001.

Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines, the No. 3 carrier at McCarran, reported 228,411 passengers in January compared with 178,224 in January 2002 and 188,575 the year before that. The airline had reduced the number of flights it had to Las Vegas last year, but is now at a higher level than in 2001.

American Airlines, Fort Worth, Texas, reported 191,892 passengers in January, 184,585 the year before that and 143,962 in January 2001. American acquired TWA in late 2001.
