Gibson’s visit to capital affects State of City

Concerns about how the state budget crisis might affect Henderson's finances brought Mayor Jim Gibson to Carson City Wednesday and delayed the finishing touches on his annual State of the City address, which was to be delivered today.
Gibson said earlier this week that his speech could be drastically different depending on what he heard from legislators during his visit to the state capital on Wednesday.
In general, the speech was to touch on past accomplishments and future challenges, Gibson said, declining to be more specific. The exact text of the speech will be heavily influenced by how much Gibson feels city funds received through the state are at risk this year, he said.
While Gov. Kenny Guinn's $1 billion tax plan does not call for taking any money from local governments, some legislative leaders, including Senate Majority Leader Bill Raggio, R-Reno, have said the state should hold on to more of the property tax money that has been passed on to local governments.
Gibson's State of the City address was scheduled for 11:30 a.m. today at the Hyatt Regency at Lake Las Vegas.
