UNLV outscored 24-15 at FT line
Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003 | 10:06 a.m.
First Half: Utah 32-31
The Man: UNLV point guard Marcus Banks had 12 points and dished off three assists.
Turning point: Utah guard Nick Jacobson keyed a 7-0 run late in the half with a 3-pointer that gave Utah a 28-27 lead.
Game within the game: Rebels switched their defenses between zone and man-to-man and played each about 10 minutes in the half. The lead changed hands six times.
Second Half: Tied, 67-67
The Man: Banks scored 11 of UNLV's last 13 points in regulation, including two pressure-packed free throws with 1.8 seconds remaining to force overtime.
Turning point: With 4:14 to go, Banks collided with Utah guard Marc Jackson on a drive to the basket on what could have been called a charge which would have been his fifth foul of the game. Instead, officials called a block and Banks sank both ends of a one-and-one to tie the game, 60-60.
Game within the game: UNLV put together a 20-4 run over a six-minute stretch to take a 63-60 lead with 3:13 to go. With Banks on the bench with four fouls during part of that comeback, the Rebels got key 3-point baskets from guards Demetrius Hunter and Ernest Turner.
Overtime: Utah 86-80
The Man: Junior center Tim Frost tied his career high with 22 points, including Utah's first six points in overtime.
Turning point: Ute freshman point guard Tim Drisdom hit a long 3-pointer from the top of the key with 2:34 left to extend Utah's lead to six points, 76-70. UNLV never got any closer than five points the rest of the way.
Game within the game: Starting center J.K. Edwards and forward James Peters fouled out in the first minute and a half of overtime to take away UNLV's post defense and inside scoring threats.
