One infant drowns, another almost drowns in two bathtub incidents

Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003 | 9:41 a.m.

A 9-month old boy drowned in a bathtub, and an 8-month old girl nearly drowned in separate incidents Monday afternoon, authorities said.

Fire department officials said a mother, about 2:30 p.m., left a 9-month old boy in a bathtub at a home in the 6000 block of Glacier Avenue, near Lake Mead Boulevard and Mount Hood Street.

"She left the room and when she came back, the baby wasn't breathing," said Joe Planck, assistant chief of the Clark County Fire Department.

The boy was taken to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 5:15 p.m., hospital spokesman Rick Plummer said.

The child has a twin who was not injured, Planck said.

A near-drowning occurred across town about 4:30 p.m.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue crews responded to a report of a unresponsive baby who had been in a bathtub at the South Cove Apartments in the 1500 block of Fremont Street, department spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

When paramedics arrived, they found an 8-month-old girl out of the bathtub. The emergency crew administered CPR until they reached the hospital, Syzmanski said.

The infant was taken to Sunrise Children's Hospital and was listed in critical condition this morning, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Metro Police are investigating the incidents.
