Arrest made over bomb

Walnut Creek, Calif., police blew up a small explosive device early Monday and arrested a Nevada man.

Authorities said they pulled Allen Clements of Stateline over about 3:30 a.m. on a routine traffic stop. Officers allege they found the bomb while searching Clements' truck.

Two blocks were cordoned off and the bomb squad was called. They blew the device up in a field a few blocks away.

Clements was booked for investigation of possessing and transporting an explosive device. He was being held on $1 million bail.

Lions honor NLV firefighter

North Las Vegas Firefighter Rees Williams was named 2002 Firefighter of the Year by the Las Vegas Host Lions Club in recognition of his heroic effort that saved a man from a burning home in November, the city announced Thursday.

The man's home was full of smoke, and he was passed out on the second floor of the home when Williams rescued him.

"I am honored to received this recognition," Williams said. "But I was just doing my job. This homeowner had safely escaped from the home but went back inside. That's when he was overcome by smoke and passed out. He was fortunate that I found him upstairs in time to revive him."

Henderson woman injured in crash

A 54-year-old Henderson woman was critically injured in a crash about 10:40 p.m. Monday on Decatur Boulevard at Reno Avenue.

Donna L. Hardy was heading north on Decatur, approaching Reno, in a 2002 Saturn two-door and when she failed to move to the left where the roadway narrows, Metro Police said.

The Saturn hit a dirt embankment and concrete water district box and rolled over, police said. Hardy wasn't wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the car. She was taken to University Medical Center, where she was recovering this morning.

Assault, suicide may be linked

A teenage girl reported that a 25-year-old man sexually assaulted her at the GameWorks arcade on Las Vegas Boulevard about 11:30 p.m. Friday, and Metro Police believe the suspect might have committed suicide at home after the alleged attack.

Lt. Jeff Carlson of Metro's sexual assault unit said the alleged victim didn't know the suspect, who reportedly worked at GameWorks. She reported the incident shortly after it occurred.

Early Saturday, a man committed suicide in North Las Vegas, and Carlson said detectives are trying to confirm that the dead man was the alleged assailant.

"We believe it's our suspect, and we're trying to confirm it with North Las Vegas," he said. "If that's true, we'll close our case."

A North Las Vegas Police spokesman didn't return phone calls this morning.
