Cancellations in East affect McCarran flights

Monday, Feb. 17, 2003 | 10:37 a.m.

The winter storm in the Eastern United States was causing flight cancellations that were affecting departures and arrivals at McCarran International Airport this morning.

America West spokeswoman Janice Monahan said six flights out of McCarran had been canceled between midnight and 9 a.m. today -- three to New York's Kennedy Airport, two to Philadelphia and one to Newark.

"Any flights into Baltimore/Washington, D.C., or Providence will be canceled and New York is looking pretty bad,"said Angela Vargo, spokeswoman for Southwest Airlines, noting that at least one non-stop flight today out of Las Vegas had been canceled.

Southwest Flight 1909 to Baltimore/Washington, that was to have taken off at 1:40 p.m. from McCarran has been canceled. However, Southwest Flight 1930 to the same destination was, as of 9 a.m., scheduled to take off at at 11:50 a.m. and land in Baltimore this evening, when that airport was expected to reopen, Vargo said.

"We do a lot of short-haul business so people taking connector flights (to the Northeast) might be able to make their first leg OK, but will experience delays and cancellations after that," Vargo said.

She did not immediately have a list of those flights.

A check of McCarran's website, www.mccarran.com, showed few flights headed directly to the East Coast.

United Flight 230 that was scheduled to take off at 8:45 a.m. had not taken off by 9 a.m. and wound up canceled.

Two flights, one from St. George and another from Los Angeles were listed as being about 15 minutes late, but it was not immediately known whether those delays were because of East Coast weather conditions or for other reasons.
