Letter: Let inspections work in Iraq
Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003 | 9 a.m.
Last week Secretary of State Colin Powell presented his "evidence" that Saddam Hussein not only is holding weapons of mass destruction but that he also has ties to al-Qaida. Yet I am still not convinced, and neither are many members of the FBI and the CIA.
We are still dealing with "assumptions"; there is no proof. The pictures in no way showed that the weapons were there, and the people speaking on the tape recordings could have been anyone. Powell and President Bush are both using our fear of another 9-11 to launch this war with Iraq.
I am shocked and horrified to find that many Americans are buying this propaganda! We are being manipulated and lied to, for this war is not in anyone's best interest. The majority of the world is against us attacking Iraq. The Iraqi people will not benefit, as 1.5 million have died since the last Gulf War due to U.S. bombing raids and starvation from our sanctions.
Our own soldiers will not benefit, either. Those who do survive will surely face similar U.S.-induced Gulf War syndromes, which already affect over 10,000 Gulf War veterans.
Please, before we get ourselves into something we will later regret, let the inspections work!
