Letter: Educating kids benefits society
Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003 | 9:01 a.m.
It is sometimes late in the evening when I get the paper read, so I thought it was a joke when I read the Feb. 10 letter by Larry Selk praising state Assemblyman Bob Beers.
If Selk honestly feels this way, then he has my sympathy. Life has got to be rough when you are so judgmental and openly selfish. In case he is also religious, he might want to research the 7 Deadly Sins, especially Avarice.
I am a very proud liberal, and the mother of a casino worker. We are college educated, have never availed ourselves of the "dole," and because of people like Selk and Beers and their disdain for the public schools, my granddaughter will attend Catholic school.
Would it make Selk happier if we just made poverty illegal? That could rid us and society of these pesky poor people. And it sounds like a great idea to withhold any support from the children of people who cannot take care of them. Just let them die from hunger and neglect ... survival of the fittest!
Here's another good idea. Withhold money from the public school system, so that poor and disadvantaged children cannot get a decent education and assure that they will grow up to be an additional burden on society, and probably members of our penal system.
I assure Mr. Selk that if we all felt as he does, we would get the society we deserve. I only hope he is an anomaly.
