More bike riders are wearing helmets

Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2003 | 9:22 a.m.

CARSON CITY -- A statewide survey taken last summer by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, shows more bicycle riders are wearing helmets.

The Nevada Office of Traffic Safety, which paid for the study, said it showed that 19.2 percent of 1,000 riders observed were wearing a helmet. That's up from 17.2 percent in 2001.

"While (it's) not as high as we would like, the increase in bike helmet use among riders represents a hopeful trend," said Bruce Mackey of the traffic safety office.

"We know that properly fitted bicycle helmets can reduce serious injuries and deaths in bike crashes by at least 85 percent."
