Friday, Feb. 7, 2003 | 10:18 a.m.

Nine UNLV football players were among the 87 student-athletes who comprised the 2002 Academic All-Mountain West football team.

The list was highlighted by the conference's first four-time honorees, two of which were Rebels: running back Joe Haro and wide receiver Toby Smeltzer, a Cimarron-Memorial High product. The other four-timers were Utah offensive tackle Jordan Gross and John Wilson of Wyoming.

To be eligible for selection, student-athletes must have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and also be a starter or significant contributor to their team.

Haro, who finished fourth on UNLV's career rushing list with 2,013 yards, graduated with a 3.17 GPA in communications while Smeltzer earned a degree in hotel administration with a 3.63 GPA.

Other Rebels who made the team were senior linebacker Bill Cofer, a three-time selection, junior running back Larry Croom, freshman tight end Michael Freund, sophomore quarterback Kurt Nantkes, freshman defensive back David Olsen, junior linebacker Derek Olsen and senior cornerback Chameion Sutton.
