Festival features film noir selections

The "Shadow of Evil" film noir festival kicks off at 7 p.m. today and runs through March 5 at the Winchester Theater, 3130 South McLeod Drive.

The films:
"Shock Corridor" today. An investigative reporter arranges to have himself confined in a mental institution in this 1963 noir classic directed by Samuel Fuller.
"Sweet Smell of Success" on Feb. 12. Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis star, respectively, in a story of a ruthless Hollywood columnist and press agent who'll do anything to win his favor.
"Shadow of a Doubt" on Feb. 19. Alfred Hitchcock directed this story of a young girl who comes to realize her beloved "Uncle Charlie" is a serial killer. With Joseph Cotton.
"Rififi" on Feb. 26. A French film classic directed by an American (Jules Dassin) forced into exile by the House Un-American Activities Committee. The story concerns four jewel thieves more fearful of each other than the police.
"Touch of Evil" on March 5. Orson Welles directed and starred in this 1958 noir masterpiece concerning corruption in a Mexican border town. The film, which was recently restored according to Welles' notes, also stars Charlton Heston, Janet Leigh, Marlene Dietrich, Zsa Zsa Gabor and Dennis Weaver.
