Evening walk ends in tragedy for Summerlin woman

Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003 | 9:54 a.m.

Carol Miller went for a walk around her neighborhood near Summerlin every night. But Saturday night, she didn't come home.

Her body -- minus her necklace and other jewelry -- was discovered Tuesday morning by construction workers near Far Hills Drive and Las Vegas Beltway.

Metro Police homicide detectives are looking for clues that might lead them to a suspect.

"She wasn't a high-risk victim," Lt. Tom Monahan said, explaining that she wasn't known to engage in dangerous behavior that might put her in harm's way. "I wouldn't want to characterize her disappearance, but we're following the evidence."

Monahan said Miller, 58, left her home near Fort Apache Road and Sahara Avenue at about 5 p.m. Saturday. When she didn't come home at her usual time, her husband began driving around the area looking for her.

When he had no luck, he called Metro and reported her missing at about 8:30 p.m.

At about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, construction workers driving along Far Hills Drive, west of beltway, found a woman's body in a roadside area used for illegal dumping, Monahan said. The Clark County coroner's office determined the victim was Miller, and an autopsy determined she had been strangled.

Anyone with information about Miller's death is urged to call CrimeStoppers at 385-5555 or Metro at 229-3521.
