Budget could boost tourism ads

Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003 | 10:48 a.m.

WASHINGTON -- Congress may include money for advertisements to boost tourism in the budget bill that sets federal spending for the current fiscal year.

A state could apply for the federal grant money, which would have to be matched by the state, to create advertisements for foreign markets that would encourage international travelers to visit the state. The money would help states that are still struggling to recoup post-Sept. 11 losses, lawmakers say.

House and Senate negotiators are meeting to finalize the details of a $390 billion spending bill that sets budgets for most of the federal government for the current fiscal year that began Oct. 1. The Senate version of the spending bill includes $50 million for the tourism ad grant program; the House version does not the money.

Rep. Jim Gibbons, R-Nev., today said he and other tourism-state lawmakers are pressing their case with House negotiators to include the tourism money in the final bill.
